WATCH: What is the Bioeconomy?
The bioeconomy is a “multi-layered” concept referring to the sustainable and circular use of renewable biological resources - like crops, forests, fish, and animals - to produce food, bio-based materials, and bioenergy.
Underpinned by science, innovation, and collaboration, Ireland is on a journey towards embedding sustainable and circular bioeconomy approaches across it's agri-food, construction, packaging, chemicals, and energy sectors. This transition will benefit the climate, businesses, and the social well-being of farming communities and citizens.
Bio-based innovation and solutions can allow us to produce new sources of healthier food and feed ingredients, to produce new, sustainable inputs for agriculture such as biobased fertilisers and biobased plastics, and to produce new sources of bioenergy. As a result, the bioeconomy is reducing reliance on fossil fuels and providing new sustainable economic solutions.
Furthermore, a sustainably developed bioeconomy can significantly improve the economic perspectives of rural and coastal communities, while delivering more sustainable choices to consumers through locally produced biobased products.
